Batoshevo monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno"

This monastery is founded in XIII century from the Bulgarian patriarch at the time when tzar Michail II Asen (1246 – 1256) reigned and for that we find evidences in a fragment from ktitor’s inscription, found in the monastery in 1836. (the inscription is kept now in the National Archeological museum in Sofia).

After Bulgaria fell under Ottoman yoke the monastery was deserted. It was dilapidated slowly almost to its foundations. It was rebuilt again as late as 1809.


In 1895 amongst the remnants of the monastery, the monk Isai settled and asked the Turkish authorities to rebuild the monastery. Three years later under the leadership of master Konstantin from Pestera and with generous donations / mainly from people from Sevlievo town / for an extremely short time – 164 days – the new monastery church was built. It is triapsid , stone building, with three cupolas, interesting with its open arched narktika . Very valuable for the National art is the wood carved icon holder and the preserved icons by Tzanjo Zahariev ( the Old, 1790 – 1886 ) representative of the Trjavna art of painting school. There are original art of painting, wall paintings in the western part of the open narthex, on the central cupola and the vaults.
The monastery complex contains also two storey buildings, bell tower and economic premises.
In 1876 the monastery is burnt down and rebuild once again after the Liberation.
